Pau d'Arco as an Antioxidant

One of the things which Pau d'Arco is claimed to be useful as is as an antioxidant. On this page, some information is provided related to what that entails.

What is an antioxidant?

In particular, this is a molecule that has the capability to hinder oxidation from affecting different molecules. They are thought to be beneficial by reduction of levels of free radicals, which can be brought on through oxidation. However, there is not a consensus on this, and some evidence indicates that supplements of antioxidants actually have an overall effect of increasing disease and mortality.

What are some antioxidants?

Aside from Pau d'Arco, there are many other things that are antioxidants. Several of them are briefly covered on this page.

Vitamin C

This antioxidant is found in many different plants. Rose hips, which are sometimes used for tea, are a particularly potent source of it, as they contain roughly 2g of vitamin C per each 100g serving. As far as fruits, kiwi is one of the more plentiful in terms of vitamin C, with about 90mg per 100g. Grapefruit also contains 30mg per 100g. For vegetables, broccoli is a selection high in this vitamin, coming it at around 90mg in the same size serving. Brussels sprouts, in the same amount, have 80mg.

Vitamin E

This is a fat-soluble antioxidant. Kiwis can also be found as something that is rich in this. The same can be said for broccoli. Sunflower seeds are high in vitamin E, as is the oil that is extracted from them. Wheat germ oil is also a source of this antioxidant. Certain nuts and their oils are also good sources. An example of this is almonds.

Coenzyme Q10

This is a "vitamin-like" antioxidant, and is also fat-soluble. It is known by a variety of other names, and is sometimes simply shortened to CoQ10. As far as food sources, it is found in a wide variety, although in amounts that differ significantly. Olive oil is one food item it can be gained from, though on the low end this contains only 4mg per kg. However, it can contain as much as 160mg in such a serving size. Meat and fish are both sources that are particularly high in CoQ10.
